The River Styx - Moments of Perfection

After a few months’ hiatus it’s also time to get cracking again on Moments of Perfection – the next animated movie from director Sami Nikki. This is one of the last developments from November and it’s actually pretty close to where I hear things.

The final challenge is to really tie the strings together in the middle section and the ending – this pass is a little wooden but contains the blueprint of where it’s going.

There is an animatic that is already starting to look amazing but I can’t wait to see the finished movie; SAmi’s unique style is defined by incredible, hand painted imagery that blends together in the trippiest way imaginable – it’s going to be awesome!

The still up there on the right is near the beginning of the story, where a funeral procession makes its way through the forest – Sami recently decided that the river Styx should make an appearance and I love the direction. Click on the image for a larger version.

New Strings - About The Money

Heh! I have new tones ;-p

Although the focus right now is developing the strings for Moments of Perfection (new versions coming out every day at the moment,) I’m also finishing off the next release – About the Money. I’ve spent a couple of sessions with Mike working on tones and parts this is where we’re going. I’m super excited about it.

Over the years I have shied away from attempting anything that sounds like a fast string melody as the quality of the tones I’ve been working with have sucked. I think you can get away with long lush synthetic strings, but the minute you try to sound like a real violin – you’d better have decent tones otherwise it just sounds bad.

I love the violin move at 1:22 that takes you into the break – in fact – whenever I listen to it – I can’t stop grinning!

Of course – this has opened a whole host of doors as far as composition goes but I’m kinda stoked.

MOP - Opening Theme Developmment

Was playing with this over the weekend as I had been struggling to dial in the string parts for the opening 1/3rd of the piece. With the piano track dialed in it’s a lot easier to break the sections down and work on them individually.

I went back and listened to the melody from the inspiration piece and realized that it would work just as well at this slower tempo. This mix is pretty grim and the parts aren’t quite there but I know where this is going now.

While Mike continues with the mix on About the Money – I will be focusing on the completion of MOP.

The image - Planet Rise - is another painting from Sami that will be used at the end of the film when the two lovers ascend into space – I think it is stunning – you can see the full image by clicking on it.
