Fibonacci 144 beats per minute

Fibonacci 144 beats per minute

I never know where the ideas or themes are going to come from, but I'm not surprised that the Fibonacci sequence found its way into the process.  For someone who's fairly obsessive about prime numbers it's kinda odd to work with such a "normal" number as 144.

I'm fascinated by the idea of a universal code, I think math is cool, I think there's power behind numbers that we don't understand but that we feel on a deep subliminal level.   And no - I'm not high as I write this! ;-p

I was using the Fibonacci spiral as a layout tool for some of the playlist art - I use the golden ratio with web design and it seemed odd that I hadn't applied it to my own work.  Of course - the minute you start playing with the ratio you're thinking of the numbers and I began to wonder what the sequence would sound like.

So the next playlist is going to examine a number of theme developments around Fibonacci derived beats per minute.  Starting out at 144, moving to 89 and probably finishing at 55 - I might take a stab at 34 just for fun - we'll see!

This track is made up of two developments played over a couple of nights - the first and longer piece is in F minor and is a little more approachable, the second shorter version is down a half step in E minor and was done to accommodate my dodgy guitar playing (not that there's any on the track!)

I Don't Know - 131 Beats Per Minute

I Don't Know - 131 Beats Per Minute

The final track in the 131 beats per minute playlist.  I like this one as it has a blues development slapped right in the middle of the track - I've been meaning to do that for a while.

While the previous tracks in the playlist were very calm and reassuring - I knew that I wanted more energy in this one.  While it starts and ends with a mellow feel, it's all about the blues scale in the middle.

There's a certain chugging nature to the way the left hand sets up the 12 bar shape and it's that driving energy that I often need when I'm hacking through something.  The trick is to make the right hand interesting but not overbearing while the left hand provides the energy without becoming monotonous.

I really like the ending too -  it makes me go back and immediately start the track again.  Listening to this on a loop is great when you want to stay focused an "in" for an hour or so.

Oh and there's a lot of Fibonacci references in the visual for those of you out there who dig that sort of stuff - I do! ;-p

God Knows - Music to Create Flow

God Knows - Music to Create Flow

The original title was "Fuck Knows" but then that's not terribly commercial is it! ;-p

The  track was built for the animation - I recorded the core piano and video track in early November 2013 and sent it to SAmi to play with.  I don't know what his process is but the end result always looks amazing.

The funny thing is, nobody actually uses the visuals when they're working, but with YouTube as the primary music distribution channel, you've got to have something cool  for people to look at so that ultimately they might listen to you.

These visuals are from SAmi , they're synced to the music.  If you do chose to watch the video, they're pretty cool!

Thanks SAmi.
