Every now and then you’ve just got to step away from the coal face and do something else. I took a break from the Wendi development today just ‘cos I needed to play something different.

This is the end of cute little 7 minute piece that I may work up and publish in full later on – it starts off all nice, major and happy (which it ultimately resolves into) but there was this sweet little part here that I thought stood out.

Just as with life – often times you need to get warmed up before you get stuck in; I have found that in order to easily to get into Wendi, I need to get my fingers limber and my head in the right place!

I have this piece of music, based around the Wendi theme that gets me thinking in three voices and helps me transition into the main theme without thinking. Here’s a clip from this morning’s session before everything went to shit, you’ll hear the beginning of the main theme start at 3:15…

I haven’t been posting ‘cos I’ve been playing – right now the focus is solely on getting this piece finished and everything else takes a back seat. There are still a few areas that need to be hammered but I’m as close as I’ve been. Finally worked out the strings for the main theme transition.

I’m getting better at capturing ideas: there’s a waterproof notepad in the shower, one entire wall of the living room is a blackboard, and now of course we have Siri.

Being able to quickly voice record an idea and have it sent to you as a message the next day is brilliant – here are a few while I was developing this track:

“Sure easy menu bar thinking and subdivide employment labor Wolk with the glory and employer”

..I have no idea what this means…

“Stamnes Musician’s offer reason files next”

…I think this has something to do with offering stems – good one – will implement later this year…

“Blog post want to want want to Paul from an astonishing the kids time I want Musicians’s alarm people who couldn’t stand tedious I’m looking skills to people with Nicola movile so Columbus works out to do that the skip.”

…yeah, no idea about this either – but it sounds fascinating…

“Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha”

…and this is Siri just laughing at me…

Clearly Siri has a way to go, but it’s kinda entertaining. I’ve off to want want to Paul…

I know – it looks as though I’ve been having an absolute blast – and I have – but I’ve also been focused.

The strings aren’t right yet – I spent all last night dialing in the keys – but this is the first time where the transition from theme 1 to theme 2 is beginning to feel right.

This could be the keys track – we’ll see…

Actually only the music came from Sunday morning – the shot of the church came from Friday evening just as the sun was starting to go down. I was struck by the contrast of the Byzantine dome next to the palm trees; you just don’t expect to see that on the Valley floor. The church is the Cathedral of Saint Mary in Van Nuys.

I’m getting happier with the new piano tone – I’ll be playing a lot of these short form developments just to get truly familiar – so far so good.

Still struggling with the piece but working to push on through. This is a variation on the theme from last Friday which I’ve been listening to a lot. It’s helping me dial in the tones and the various relationships between the individual voices.

Of course I like this so much I’m thinking about how to incorporate it into the main theme; as Charlotte says – it is ridiculously sad and I kind of like that…

I don’t know why, but, when I get to the end of a piece I find it incredibly hard to finish. I’ve spent the last month rewriting, tweaking, hating the tone quality and generally being dreadfully unhappy with everything about the Wendi piece.

This is normal – I wish I didn’t go through it but I do. I’m probably another couple of weeks away from publishing but it will come eventually. While I work through the bullshit – every now and again I have to sit down and beat the crap out of my frustration on the keys. This is what it sounds like…
